Knowing the Difference between Trimmers and Clippers can Keep You a Cut Above the Competition

In any profession, finding the right tool for the job is always important. The same can be said for cutting hair. Knowing which tool to use can set you a cut above the rest — literally.

Electric clippers and trimmers are the standards when it comes to barbershops. They are fast, efficient, and — in the right hands —versatile. Professional barber clippers and trimmers are not all the same. Some are made for specific hairs, jobs, and even body parts.

But do you know when it is appropriate to use clippers and when to use trimmers?

Clippers vs. Trimmers

When it comes to dispatching large areas of hair, clippers are the tool for the job. With their wide-angle head and hefty body, a pair of clippers is perfect for the initial stages of cutting. But because of their bulk, clippers are only acceptable during the initial stages of a cut. For finer and sharper details, you’ll need a trimmer.

Trimmers are small and more fine-tuned than clippers. They are limited in their cutting power but make up for it with their maneuverability, which is helpful for sculpting hair, sideburns, beards, and goatees.

Not all trimmers are made the same, however. Because of their ease of use, commercial trimmers have evolved into devices for more detailed applications.

Types of Trimmers

A facial hair trimmer, as its name implies, is made explicitly for the facial hair. If you groom beards and goatees regularly, a facial hair trimmer is perfect for you. Facial hair trimmers do not have the same power as a general trimmer, though, and using them on your client's head may damage the trimmer.

Nose and ear trimmers are small, pen-sized trimmers made to cut unsightly nasal and ear hair. They are lightweight and extra sensitive so that trimming those hard-to-reach areas doesn’t have to be a painful chore.

For the fairer sex, there are bikini trimmers. These are portable, hyper-sensitive trimmers made especially for feminine areas.

Clipper Options

Clippers have their fair share of variety, too, to cater to all grooming needs — both human and pet.

Pet clippers are designed for the pet grooming industry. They are small and sensitive enough to use on even the tiniest animal but powerful enough to take care of fur and hair alike. As such, they should never be used on human hair and skin.

Some consumer clippers sold today come with multi-purpose kits that cover all your needs. They have interchangeable heads that allow you to cut, shave, and trim.

Trimmers vs. Shavers

For facial hair grooming, it is important to determine the type of shave a client needs. Trimmers and shavers differ from each other in a number of ways. The main focus of a shaver is to give a clean shave. Thus, shavers come in rounded or foil blades.

Trimmers, on the other hand, are good for customization. If a client wants a bespoke look for his or her facial hair or haircut, then a trimmer is the right tool for the job.
